No he was definatley alive. I just don't think herge wanted to revisit it or it would take time away from the pressing issues in the story at that point.

I always thought the taxi driver looked like one of the Thompsons, especially in the closeup shot after being sideswiped.
Then again, so does the Gendarme that pulls them up in the village.
