I think he was still doing his job at that time because he wanted to spend the rest of his life in sea and to drown his sorrows over such a tragedy.

Later on, after meeting Tintin he changed his life a lot.
He felt excitement, a parental/gurdian type feeling to Tintin, or maybe Tintin reminded him of his lost son or maybe his brother or maybe his sister's son i.e., nephew (which was not mentioned in the books).

Imagination is mankind's greatest tool..give it but a tiny chance, and it will run wild :D

Well, the past lives of all the Tintin characters are open to anyone's imagination..Maybe Herge liked keeping it that way-it always kept alive a sense of mystery, making readers wonder--
What must Tintin's family have been like?
What was Professor Calculus's past; did he have a family?
Who is Captain Haddock really?

mct16:
For Haddock to become an alcoholic to drown his sorrows over such a tragedy I could understand, but to go to sea and thus practically relive the same disaster over and over again sounds a bit weird.

I too agree with this..if he lost his whole family in a disaster at sea, Captain Haddock probably would never venture out at sea again, let alone be a ship captain.. moreover, its not necessary that he lost his whole family at sea or something.. maybe he had to go away from them for some reason..or leave them behind and venture out into the big bad world at a very young age, and maybe he has not heard from them since... and the hardships he faced might have made him turn to drinking..that would explain his crying out "MUMMY!!!!!!!!!!!!" like a small child... :D
