I've been reading Benoit Peeters excellent (if at times dark and depressing) book Herge, Son of Tintin. In it, Peeters believes that the earlier version of The Land of Black Gold wasn't racist but actually portrayed the reality of the times it was written in and the reality of what was happening in that part of the world.
