Create your own Hergé/ MT&LL-C Character Names

#1 · Posted: 10 Apr 2005 07:19 · Edited by: Jyrki21
We all know the proclivity of Hergé and his English translators to give characters names which represent their professions or personalities (Haddock, Calculus, Cutts, Bolt, Kanrokitoff, etc.).

So here are some suggestions for character names along those lines (all given some semblance of nationality, as this was also an Hergé specialty).

Chipnokov - the Russian huckster ("cheap knockoff")

Zütszüt - the Hungarian tailor ("zoot suit")

Al-Manaq - the Arabic record-keeper ("almanac")

Legault-Maillégault - the Belgian waffle maker ("Leggo my Eggo!")

Szlalomski - the Polish skier ("slalom ski")

Itkaantbirainen - the Finnish weatherman ("it can't be raining")

Any ideas?

Well of course there's Jacques Strappe, the famous Quebecois hockey player, but we all know him anyway... :)

"Ai Mimadore" the Japanese reporter ("Ay! Mi madre!", a Spanish exclamation.)
"Szodoff," a Syldavian purveyor of useless junk ("sod off")
"Baozi Hao," a Chinese restaurant propietor (it means "good dumpling" in Mandarin, rearranged a bit though.)

Arthur Panda Spudz (Panda is his middle name) - Cockney east end greengrocer (half a pound of spuds [potatoes])

A minor character, if Tintin ever comes to London...;)

Hanyamata, a Japanese spy (taken from Indonesian "eyes only").

I think I have more, but oh dear, none other than this one stuck in my head now.
