July 21st marks the day in 1831 on which King Leopold 1st (not just the first Leopold, but the first king of the recently declared independent country, following their revolution and independence from The Netherlands in 1830), took the oath, and in the presence of the National Congress swore allegiance to the Belgian Constitution in the Coudenbergh Place in Brussels.

It’s a national holiday, and a good time seems to be had by all!

Happy holiday, Belgium!
