I think it would be better for you to say that that is how you pronounce it; it certainly isnâ€™t how he pronounced itâ€¦

Yes, but how do you pronounce those? ;-)
Do you say serdje(as in Serge Gainsbourg) or sur-guy (as in Serge Diaghilev)?
And I haven't heard of Perge before (although I see it is a place in Turkey), so I've no idea how that is supposed to be said.

The first syllable is pronounced like the er in fathER;
the second syllable is pronounced like the sure in leiSURE.
The stress is on the last syllable.

Ah - well that adds a new complication, as I don't rhyme those two words... :-)
Purge uses an "uh" (as in pug); serge (the fabric) uses an "eh" (as in person).

I pronounce it Air-jay. However, once I tried to special order The Secret of 'The Unicorn' from a bookstore over here in the USA, where almost no one knows of Tintin, and the woman at the bookstore said: "Oh yes. Would that be by Hurdj?"

The "ay" is not exactly as in English, but that's the sound that is closest to the "é" at the end of the name. The French "é" has a unique sound.

Oops.
I guess "her-gay" is a very American, uneducated pronunciation.
So it's "air-szhei"???
(don't speak French, but hope to in the future)

Awwww! Don't feel bad! It is not "uneducated"! The trend is about how Hergé is pronounced - I guess in his country of origin - so, I explained it.
Here, in Puerto Rico, I say "Eryé" (the 'r' in Spanish; and 'y' here sounds like 'j' in English). I might use the original sound, but, then, people will start with "Oh,Excuuuse me, madam..."

That sounds almost perfect! The 'é' is like a combination of e and i, in one sound.
