How many of you have heard of Jules Verne (1828-1905)? He wrote "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea" "Around the World in Eighty Days" "The Survivors of the Chancellor" "Facing the Flag" etc. etc. etc. He wrote over a hundred books. I'm currently reading "Invasion of the Sea" the last book he ever wrote.

Yes, I've heard of him. I've read two books, Around the World in Eighty Days and Journey to the Centre of the Earth. I found both to be quite good, but I liked Journey better.

I love Jules Verne, particularly Journey to the Centre of the Earth. The last one I read was Survivors (or Wreck) of the Chancellor. I think his tales stand up particularly well in modern times. Anyone see the new Jackie Chan/Alan Partridge (I mean, Steve Coogan) '..80 Days' yet?

Didn't (doesn't) our right honourable friend Mr Paul Durdin have a web page about him somewhere?

Best -
Garen.

I would certainly hope most of you would have heard of him!

I read 20,000 Leagues this year... quite long, drags at parts, but all-around good... up until the ending... which makes Alice in Wonderland look like a brilliant, well-thought-out finish. :)

Those who have read it know what I'm talking about...

Hi, Jules Verne's Merry Miseries of Three Travelers in Scandinavia (1861) has never been officially translated into English, well I'm working on translating it, if any of you are interested I'll post it on this forum. Let me know! ...

Anyone see the new Jackie Chan/Alan Partridge (I mean, Steve Coogan) '..80 Days' yet?

I've seen it - the parts that I recognised from the book were : the names "Phileas Fogg", "Passpartout" and "Inspector Fix"; the idea of circumnavigating the globe in 80 days ... that's about it. The film is absolutely nothing like the book whatsoever - enjoyable enough, though (especially "spot the celebrity").

Personally, I've read "Around the World in 80 Days", "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea", "Journey to the Centre of the Earth" and "From the Earth to the Moon". I enjoyed them all, although my favourites are Journey and 80 Days.

I've read quite a number of his books, and I am a great fan. And yes, Garen, I do have a few pages on my website about him. :)

Like Herge, Verne always did a huge amount of research for his books -- he didn't get it right ALL the time, but he did pretty well seeing what he had to work on!

Anyone remember the cartoon they did when Phileas Fogg was a lion? That was a good interpretation.

I saw a poster for the new film, I recall PF flying in a balloon but not in some sort of homemade flying machine. I haven't seen it

Heard of Jules Verne? I hope your'e joking. He's only one of the most famour sci-fi authors ever!

I've only read 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Around the World in 80 days and Journey to the Centre of the Earth and that was when I was around 10 (11 years ago). Of these I enjoyed Journey to the Centre of the Earth the most and then 20,000 Leagues.
Great books!

I've seen the movies of all three (I mean the old version of 80 Days, not the recent one). Journey was well done for its age.

I'm more of a H.G. Wells fan myself though. I haven't read any sci-fi books better than 'War of the Worlds' (1897) and The Time Machine was pretty good.
