Flight 714 is my favourite; it caught my eye straight away. We have the lovely Skut, we have a great storyline, we have a fantastic ending. What more could you want?

My favourtite is Prisoners of the Sun. It just takes the story to other level after Seven Crystal Balls.
Friends traversing half-way round the world through snow, jungle and mountains to rescue their friend from the clutches of an ancient civilisation.
The Calculus Affair is also a favourite. It presents themes of mystery, suspense and conspiracy in a spine-chilling adventure where our heroes have to save their friend again.

Ok, this is going to be challenging! I'm going to do it "countdown" style:

10) Tintin In America. The closest he ever came to Florida, (aka home). Sigh.
9) The Shooting Star. This one is pure sci fi, even more so than 714!
8) Tintin and the Picaros. What can I say....I like the jeans.
7) Destination Moon. The "acting the goat" bit always makes me laugh!
6) The Blue Lotus. This book made me want to learn Chinese as a kid.
5) Flight 714. Herge went out on a limb here, and I like it!
4) Cigars of the Pharaoh. I love the pure adventure of this story.
3) Tintin in Tibet. A very moving work for a "kids" book. Great Heart indeed.
2) The Calculus Affair. Pretty close to perfect, a great mix of humor and action.
1) The Castafiore Emerald. Funny, unique, charming, fantastic.

Awh, this is tough. I'll try my best. Ten favorite books - in no particular order:

Black Island
King Ottokar's Sceptre
Crab with Golden Claws
Secret of the Unicorn
Land of the Black Gold
Destination Moon
Explorers on the Moon
Red Sea Sharks
Tintin in Tibet
Tintin and Picaros

I spent like 20 minutes writing this... xD They're all so good I can't decide which ones are the top ten!

1. Cigars of the Pharaoh (I love the combination of mystery and action.)
2. The Calculus Affair (Another good Mystery, and I love the quote: "There, now i can die")
3. Tintin in America (A classic)
4. Tintin and the Picaros (I love how it's kinda like the Trojan war but not)
5. The Black Island (A great Mystery)
6. The Blue Lotus (If you like Cigars of the Pharaoh, you have to like Blue Lotus)
7. The Red Sea Sharks (Brings back many old characters)
8. The Broken Ear (Good Mystery)
9. The Land of Black Gold (I don't know why I like it, I just do)
10. Explorers on the Moon (My first, I really like the moon setting)

To say that I am coming late to this thread is a bit of an understatement, but the question "Which is my favourite book?" (or should I say "album"?) is one that most Tintin fans will probably have asked at one time or another. After some reflection, I came I think that I'd have to say . . .

1. The Secret of the Unicorn

The next 8 come in fairly quick succession, and putting them in order wasn't easy:

2. King Ottokar's Sceptre
3. Prisoners of The Sun
4. Red Rackham's Treasure
5. The Castafiore Emerald
6. The Seven Crystal Balls
7. The Calculus Affair
8. Tintin in Tibet
9. The Crab with the Golden Claws

Those 9 are, for me, pretty close together. Number 10 is difficult, because there are 3 or 4 which I find it difficult to choose between. Ask me again in 5 years, and the answer might be different, but for now, it's going to be . . .

10. The Black Island

I was curious about what overall trends about the relative popularity of the books have emerged from this thread - and have produced the following not-very-scientific league tables.

First - taking all posts in which contributors have expressed opinion about favourites (regardless of whether they have put them in order or how many books they have named, but excluding the posts that went along the lines of "Well I don't know if I have any favourites, but I do like such and such . . . .") I have counted the number of times each book has been mentioned. The results were as follows:

1. Tintin in Tibet - 31
2. The Calculus Affair - 28
3. Prisoners of the Sun - 25
3= The Blue Lotus - 25
3= The Black Island - 25
6. King Ottokar's Sceptre - 19
6= The Seven Crystal Balls - 19
8. Explorers on the Moon - 18
9. Destination Moon - 17
9= Red Sea Sharks - 17
9= Flight 714 - 17
12. The Secret of the Unicorn - 16
13. The Broken Ear - 15
14. The Castafiore Emerald - 14
15. Tintin and the Picaros - 13
16. Red Rackham's Treasure - 11
16= The Land of Black Gold - 11
18. Tintin in America - 9
18= Cigars of the Pharaoh - 9
20. The Shooting Star - 7
21. The Crab with the Golden Claws - 6
22. Tintin in the Congo - 1
22 = Tintin and Alph-Art - 1
24. Tintin in the Land of the Soviets - 0

Second, I have taken all the posts in which contributors noted their 10 favourites in order, and given 10 points for a first choice, 9 for a second, etc., producing a weighted league table.

1. Tintin in Tibet - 126
2. The Calculus Affair - 118
3. The Seven Crystal Balls - 101
4. Prisoners of the Sun - 98
5. The Black Island - 85
6. The Blue Lotus - 74
7. King Ottokar's Sceptre - 61
8. The Red Sea Sharks - 60
9. The Castafiore Emerald - 59
10. Red Rackham's Treasure - 57
11. The Secret of the Unicorn - 50
11= Flight 714 - 50
13. Tintin & the Picaros - 44
14. The Broken Ear - 42
15. Cigars of the Pharaoh - 38
16. Destination Moon - 37
17. The Shooting Star - 36
18. Explorers on the moon - 34
19. Tintin in America - 31
20. The Crab with the golden Claws - 24
21. The Land of Black Gold - 23
22. Tintin in the Congo - 6
23. Tintin in the Land of the Soviets - 0
23=. Tintin and Alph-Art - 0

And then third, I produced a league table of the favourites of the true devotees - i.e. the four people who are among the top 20 contributors to the forum and who listed their top 10 in order. My thinking is that the people who have posted most frequently on the forum are probably those who know the books best, and that it would be interesting to see how the opinions of those who have a greater in depth knowledge of the books compare with those of the rest of us. Only 14 books actually got any votes, and seven books appeared on all four lists, indicating a surprising amount of agreement about the books they liked best.

1. The Seven Crystal Balls - 36
2. Prisoners of the Sun - 31
2= The Calculus Affair - 31
4. Tintin in Tibet - 27
5. The Blue Lotus - 20
6. The Secret of the Unicorn - 16
7. The Crab with the Golden Claws - 13
8. King Ottokar's Sceptre - 9
8= Flight 714 - 9
10. The Broken Ear - 8
11. The Black Island - 6
11 = The Red Sea Sharks - 6
13. Red Rackham's Treasure - 5
14. The Land of Black Gold - 3

Aristide Filoselle:

That's interesting, well done! It's funny how Tibet comes top in the the first two tables, but then slips down and is overtaken by Crystal Balls, Prisoners and The Calculus Affair in the 'true devotees' table. I guess the overwhelming (blindingly obvious) conclusion to your data is that Tibet is the favourite amongst most Tintin fans, but the devotees prefer Crystal Balls. Nice to know I'm with the devotees on that.

Good work!
