Identification needed: Which Tintin series has just been advertised on DVD?

Sainsbury's have just screened an advert for a DVD collection of Tintin animated stories, however they did not say which version it was (Belvision or 1990's version), all they said was "5 DVD's containing all 21 animated stories". Could I ask for assistance as to which version it is, as £15 for the whole lot sounds very reasonable indeed?

This is the 1990s version.

£15 appears to be the going price across the board - it's the same at Amazon, Play, HMV...

Just as a little clarification to people beginning their collections, or recently converted to Tintin: if it says that there are 21 stories it has to be the Ellipse-Nelvana series, as the Belvision cartoons didn't adapt the majority of the books.

The only Belvision Tintin stories available on DVD currently are in the "Movie" boxed set, comprising The Calculus Case (The Calculus Affair), Prisoners of the Sun and The Mystery of Shark Lake (The Lake of Sharks).

If you are thinking of collecting the other stories, they are only to be found as video-casette releases on the second-hand market. Best to look in charity shops or eBay if you want them.

There is some information here, or do a forum search of "Belvision" or "Ellipse-Nelvana" to find further info.

Thank you very much indeed.
Does this therefore mean that as they managed to adapt the majority of the books, this is the DVD to get or should I also get the Belvision ones for comparsion?

Basically, the Ellipse-Nelvana series pretty much sticks to the original books with just minor changes to the plot for PC and reasons of length.

The Belvision version however is pretty much a mangle of the plots with a lot of liberties taken in the storyline in a way similar to the current movie.
An example is Calculus and Haddock play major parts in the Black Island adaptation, when they did not appear in the original book.

It's up to you, really.

Moderator Note: It's a bit disingenuous to bring in an emotive term like "PC" - the changes were made to make sure that the episodes complied with broadcasting standards for children's TV, and relevant laws in places they would be shown. So if smoking and drinking alcohol are not to be promoted to children, or can't be shown in timeslots that the broadcasters want/ need to sho them in, then dropping characters smoking and drinking isn't political correctness, it's just keeping legal.
