Harrock n roll wrote: It was - evident from a page taken from the French Coeurs Vaillants, 9 April 1939. The spelling in the introductory text is different here - “Vargèze” - but it mentions it being in the Haute Savoie region.

Interesting! This means that the Georges/Vargèse-pun was invented long before Tintin in Tibet.

In this thread we've discussed the dropped first-panel from Tibet but [-snip-] shows a lot of other dropped first panels. I especially like the first strip from The Red Sea Sharks.

Interesting. Maybe Vargèse could also simply be a joke with the typical names of Haute-Savoie most renowed ski-centers: Mègeve, Saint-Gervais... Vargèse could be Gervais (Gervèse [sounds like jaarveezee]- Vargèse [sounds vaarjeezee]), and z or s sound mostly the same in french.

But in 1952 Hergé was in the Italian Alps, in Varese, so from Varese to VarGese jiust add the "sound" of rg - hergé. See: Hergé Mots et Jeux de Mots, p.222.
