Q86: Crying Tintin

In his very readable (and generally accurate) book about Tintin and Hergé, Harry Thompson states that "Chang is the only character Tintin ever cries for". But this is not strictly true. On two separate occasions, Tintin is seen shedding a tear for - or in sympathy with - two other characters in the course of the books. Who are they?

(Give the characters' names, the names of the books and the points in the stories when the tear-shedding occurs. I don't need page numbers if you're answering from memory, as long as it's clear you've remembered the right bits of the narratives.)

One of the occasion is in Land of Soviets, when Tintin (wrongly) assumes that Snowy (Milou) is dead. If I recall correctly Tintin is sitting on a locomotive at the time. Not sure that this is correct, since I sort of remember that the quiz is only about a the colored books. But it is the only one I remember right now.

I sort of remember that the quiz is only about a the colored books.

Yeah, rule two of the Trivia Callenge rules does indeed state that "Questions should be based on the English language colour edition Tintin books" so this wasn't one of the two books I had in mind. (Maybe I should have specifically ruled Land of the Soviets out in my question anyway though, to avoid confusion. If I'd thought to do so, I would have. Sorry!)

Anyway, keep trying and good luck.

Does he shed a tear thinking about Snowy when he (wrongly) assumes he is dead after being shot by the Sondonesians in Flight 714? Unsure of the page but they were being held prisoner in a bunker at the time.

Also Mrs Wang in The Blue Lotus after her son, Didi suffers another fit of madness?(Pg29)

Well done, Ranko. You're spot on with both parts of your answer. He does indeed shed a tear for Snowy (just one tear pictured) shorty after they're put in the bunker in Flight 714.

And he sheds quite a lot of tears in sympathy with Mrs Wang whilst trying to comfort her in the scene you've correctly identified from The Blue Lotus.

So, as it happens, labrador road 26 actually mentioned one of the right characters with his Land of the Soviets answer, but I couldn't see a way of telling him he was sort of on the right track without giving too much away!

Anyway, a point to you, Ranko, and the next question.

By the way, some other studies are also erroneous about Tintin crying -and about other facts too, as if those books were somehow generated by each other rather than by the reading of the Tintin books themselves.

Sorry guys, I am going to have to pass on this one. My questions don't sound so good in the cold light of morning!

That's OK Ranko, so long as you don't mind forfeiting your point as per Rule 5.

He does, and that was one of the instances that Ranko already gave in his correct answer! Maybe you accidentally missed Ranko's first post to this thread. ;-)
