Hi all,

Just before Christmas I heard someone mention "Tintin" (I forget the context) and memories of my early childhood started flooding in. I needed to purchase these books...

I racked my brain trying to decide which to buy, hardcover or paperback. Having never seen the hardcover editions but recognizing the low difference in price (about $5 online) I decided to get the hardcover editions and I'm really happy with my decision. However, I'm finding it difficult to locate several books. Cigars of the Pharaoh, Broken Ear, for example.

Questions:
Which format do you prefer and why?

Are the Egmont hardcover books going out of print? Or, are some harder to find than others? (I think I answered my own question here).

Thanks, it's been a blast reading posts from other Tintin lovers such as myself.

Welcome to Tintinologist, Richie!
I prefer the paperback editions, but that is probably just because they are the most common around here.

Well I prefer the 3-in-1 hardcovers published by Little Brown and Company of Boston. Here in the Philippines, it costs Php699. It's more practical than buying 2 paperbacks of single episodes for the same price (for each paperback costs Php395)

I've been slowly replacing the tattered Methuen and Magnet paperbacks of my youth (donated to my nephew!) with new hardback copies over the last three years or so - all those lovely coloured spines on my bookshelf! (and the yellow of Picaros sticking out like a sore thumb!)

What's the deal with Land Of Black Gold though? It's the last one on my list, and I've had it on order from Amazon for over two months now (keep getting emails telling me they're still looking for a copy for me.) I've just checked at the Tintin Shop's website, and it's the only one out of the 24 which isn't available in hardback. I assume that means that it's out of print, but it seems a bit weird that it's the only one out of the lot!

Hey John,

Curious... Land of Black Gold was one of the first ones that arrived. Check out Amazon's Canadian site and order it there. Here's a link:

http://www.amazon.ca/Tintin-Land-Black-Gold-Herge/dp/1405208147/ref=sr _1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1203986982&sr=8-1

As for me, I'm having a hard time finding the following:

The Broken Ear
The Crab with the Golden Claws
Red Rackham's Treasure
The Seven Crystal Balls
The Red Sea Sharks
Flight 714
Lake of Sharks

Don't want to order it from the UK yet as the shipping is expensive for 7 books. If anyone knows where I can order it online (I've checked lots of places) please let me know.

I wouldn't say that Lake of Sharks was a priority. It is based on an animated Tintin film from the '60s or '70s, that was not written by Herge, and is just a bunch of stills from the film. I think that it is not even as long as a typical Tintin book (62 pages)

Good news... all my books finally arrived. I have started reading them in order and am currently on Black Island.

One thing I never noticed as a kid is that there are so many connections between the books. From characters to the very minor (Tintin wearing pyjamas from Blue Lotus in first few pages).

This is great!

I wish I could have read all of the Tintin books at the same time.

"THE BLACK ISLAND" RULES!!!!

I have most of the books in paperback and a few in hardcover.

Well, paperbacks are cheaper. And not all of us can afford to have all the series in hardcover. But hardcover books have semi glossed pages and brighter colors.

I had a hard time deciding which to buy. I'm very nostalgic for the paperbacks.

I just finished the Black Island. That and Red Rackham's Treasure were the firs ones I read. I'm curious to see if they'll still be my favourite after reading them all. Starting Sceptre tonight.
