Popol Out West: what is the difference between prints?

Hi!

Having owned Tintin books since childhood and keeping them, I was delighted to see my two young boys taking an interest and reading them.

I was asked about Popol Out West and that as it is not a Tintin book, could they take it to the school book fare to swap?

Using the good old Internet, I found this website - superb idea and I am now a member!

I read one post, and Jockosjungle’s excellent link to his article English Hergé Books: The Complete Collectors Guide – these appear to be the only real info on POW.

The hardback book does exist - I have one; it is possibly rare, and I can confirm that it is no longer going to the school fare!

Can anyone provide any further information on this rare/unrare/cheap/expensive book?

Also I have a question about prints.

Has a study been undertaken about the quality of the printing between editions - I seem to think the 1959 versions that I have are richer in colour that the modern printed editions that I had to buy for my kids.

Does anyone tend to agree with me on this - or is it old age creeping in?

Any thoughts would be appreciated!
Thanks

All I know is that Popol Out West (hardcover) is quite rare and fetches upwards of £120. I've seen it for more but Amazon marketplaces are changing around £120.

Obviously it depends greatly on the condition of the book - a ratty copy would fetch next to nothing.
Hope this helps.

Many thanks for your response.

Not sure what “ratty copy” means, but the hardback version that I have is in good condition.

It also has a sticker on the back cover that gives the value of 12s (now 60p) (warm glow for pre-decimilization prices).

Printed info states first published in Great Britain in 1969. Printed by Casterman, S.A. Tournai, Belgium. SBN 416 13920 5.

The boys have now re-read the story a few more times since reading Tintinrulz reply giving a value of £120.00.

Even the wife has shown an interest! Funny enough I did a search on eBay and found a softcover version that reached £10.51 when the auction ended but it had a Reserve Not Met statement on it.

I personally won't be selling it and will keep it as a family book to pass onto future generations.

I bought a copy on ebay a while back for about £75 for the first edition. I think the Amazon marketplace valuations are a little on the high side
