Query from site reader, Daniel Krygier:
Hi,
How do I identify a genuine French first color edition of Blue Lotus (Le Lotus bleu) in terms of front cover / back cover, interior and external colors / characteristics etc?
What does it mean if a copy where only the 1946 first edition year is stated as copyright inside the book but where it says on the back cover "Depose au Ministre de la justice, Paris 16 Juillet 1949"?
I would really appreciate to receive some advice from you kind Tintin experts and I thank you in advance for your help.
Best regards
Daniel Krygier

That wouldn't identify it as specifically a first edition, as most of the albums had such up until the Sixties when the perfect-bound cardboard spine appeared.

I'd think that given the disparity in the two dates, the book isn't a first edition.
There is a guide-book somewhere (in French) which describes the variations for making identifications, and I think that member Harrock n Roll has a copy, so perhaps he might be able to look up and see what's what?

Happy to oblige. The book says that the title (Le Lotus Bleu) is blue on the title page of the first colour edition. There are some other distinguishing features on the back page list of available titles, but the blue lettering ought to be enough to identify it as a first edition. I believe it's blue on the facsimile edition too, but it should also say somewhere inside that it was a facsimile with a 2003 copyright.

As jock notes, given that the book says 1949 on the back, it certainly wont be a first edition...
