I recently found a colour English copy in a junk shop in Brighton for £3. It's a rollicking good read, in the cruder style of Hergé's earlier books and has a few devices later used in Tintin adventures - like using magnetism to attract arrows (Congo). Good fun:), with rocket powered horses! I would recommed it if you can find a copy... :(

Yeah,
My brother bought Popol Out West (the colour English copy) at AngusnRobertson bookstore five or so years ago. It was on sale for $2 Australian! and it said by the creator of Tintin, so he bought it, (recommended price at the time was $7.95 Australian).
I had a read of it when he bought it and thought it was good, and nice and cheap too. I found it funny.
It looks to have been drawn around the time of Tintin in America or something (1931?).

Popol was first published in Le Petit Vingtième between February the 8th, and August 16th, 1934, so it's after America, and vaguely reminiscent of it too.
Why he wasn't drawing Tintin at the time? I don't know!
Perhaps the publishers wanted something for a younger audience?
That's basically why he started doing Jo, Zette & Jocko.
By the way, has anybody ever seen any Quick & Flupke in English?

Oh, I remember that particular sale, Tintinrulz! In addition to Popol, the Quick & Flupke books (in English) were also for sale then at that amazing price.
Even more amazing is the fact that I did not buy the books then...
I kick myself every time I think about it!

Yeah, I'd give $2 for a copy of that book! :P

Or for any book by Hergé, actually...

Was it by Hergé?

Yes, Popol was indeed by Hergé.

When I was in Hamburg some years ago, I picked up a German edition of Popol for just under DM30.-, at a comics store called Wahnsinn (Insanity).

I've seen a couple on eBay in English - I have no idea why I didn't bid on them, as they both ended at about £2!

All these copies of Popol seem to be very cheap indeed, but I've been lead to believe it is a very rare and expensive collectors item... Is this a myth?

Is this a myth?
Well, rarity, price and desirability are the three factors which drive a collector's market, and each relies on the other to a certain extent. Really that just boils down to, how much are you (or anyone) willing to pay?
There isn't any fixed scale of values, and although the number of copies of the book probably is small, if the number of people looking for one is smaller, and they don't want to pay high prices, then the cost could easily stay low.

I'm sure you could find a high priced copy if you didn't want to pick up a bargain...? ;-)
