Hello, folks!
My real name is Gabrielle. This is my third post on this site and I’m excited! I've been a Tintin fan since I was ten, when a friend brought V. 6 of the three-in-one series over to my house. I eyed it all evening, and 'forgot' to remind them to take it home. From that day on I was hooked. I checked the books out from the library, read them to myself, read them to my sibs, renewed them, and read them again. My mom finally took the hint and bought me the series, book by book, down to Tintin and the Alph-Art.
I’m sixteen. It’s funny...from the moment I read Tintin, I couldn’t wait to be his age. I wanted to grow up and start having adventures right away. I had my plans laid. First the moon, then the Middle East, then all the European stuff. There was only one catch: I couldn’t find out how old Tintin was! I tried to calculate it a couple of times, but kept coming up with ages like seventy-five or ninety. Certainly I didn’t want to wait that long.
The hard moment came, of course. I found out that most people do not do the things that Tintin does. I found out that I probably would not. I also found out that Tintin doesn’t have an age. Therefore I would never be as old as he is.
I don’t have a favorite Tintin book. I have unfavorite Tintin books (Flight 714 and Tintin and the Picaros), but the rest are too individual. Each story has its own special angle.
I am sort of a purist when it comes to Herge’ and his comics. I don’t mind imitative drawings: I do that myself. Nor does fanfiction bother me. However, attempts at actual comic raises my hackles. I can admire the devotion of an honest fan following the master. I can appreciate personal talent. But in the literal medium of story and art combined, I am fiercely defensive. No one can equal Herge’ in his creation. No one. Grrr.
I’m from the U.S., where Tintin is woefully overcast by Spiderman and Mickey Mouse. I’m a junior in high school, aiming for a medical field. Besides Tintin, my life consists of five siblings, five cats, J.R.R. Tolkien, Homer, and a piano. I have a companionable disgust for anime; no offense.
Everyone who’s read Tintin knows that he travels all over the world. May I take this opportunity to comment that he quite literally has. Never in my short life have I seen a single web page contributed to by a Swede, an Asian, a Brit, an Indian. We’re ages from ten to “over 21â€. Yet here we are, connected. For those who took the time to read this, I admire your fortitude. This is more a short book than a brief biography. I appeal to over enthusiasm; here in the Disney nation, Tintin is a rare subject. I apologize for taking up so much room. Forgive me.
I’ve never quite gotten over the idea of an adventuresome life. Who knows? I’m young…aspiring…reasonably courageous. Maybe the life of a reporter/detective/nosy parker could be mine after all.
