Announcement: CAPTCHA - new anti-spam measure in place

#1 · Posted: 29 Dec 2010 08:55
Our hitherto spam-free community got hit hard by spam over Christmas. We thank our veteran moderators: Harrock n roll, for his quick thinking in stopping the spam flood; and jock123, for the hours he spent cleaning up the mess (450+ rubbish messages) and restoring things to normal.
Thank you, also, to concerned members who wrote last weekend to alert us of the spam attack.

To try minimise the risk of future disruptions, we have introduced CAPTCHA. Only new members and those with low post counts will need to verify themselves as human before they can post.

The Happy Tintinologist Spam-Busting Team!

Why does it ask to verify if your a human?

Because spam attacks are often carried out by programs, scripted to trawl the web for forums, automatically sign-on, and generate their messages.
Security messages which have to be read, interpreted, re-written and sent back are harder for such automated systems to deal with, and thus add a layer of protection against further spamming.

Please be sure to familiarize yourself with the Forum Posting Guidelines.
