Cartoonist Mike Lynch has posted some photos on his blog which he has been sent by a friend in Brussels.

Almost anyone who visits the city, especially by train into the Garde du Midi, will have seen the revolving illuminated sign on the roof of the building in which the offices for Tintin magazine were situated.

This was such a landmark that it was given the Belgian equivalent of listed status to protect it. But it seems from the photos that it has been removed for cleaning and conservation. The skyline just won’t look the same until they are back!

Update: There is more on the story at Actualitte.com, where it is reported that they are off to be restored, and will be back in place on the 29th September, in time for a BD exhibition in the building.

And for stats fans, they reveal that the sign is 5m high, and weights 3,750 Kg!

Update II: There’s a more detailed piece here, which has the history of the sign, its manufacture and the mechanisms involved, as well as the story of the restoration.
