Early American translations

When I was young (1973), my father borrowed a complete hardcover set of english books from a friend of his. We had only a few of them, like "Crab/Golden Claws."

I was surprised that among them were versions by American publisher Grossett & Dunlap (I specifically remember an American CwtGC and the two-parter "Secret of the Unicorn"/"Red Rackham's Treasure." Like the British translations, the names of the characters were the same. However, the typeface for the balloons was completely different, and the translation was notably different. The major difference I remember is how Thomson/Thompson (not sure which one did this) had a different response when he would attempt to repeat something. Instead of saying "To be precise...", the twin would respond "I would even say more...(and then say something stupid/funny). And of course it was American spelling.

Does anyone on this forum have these versions out there?

It sounds like you're referring to the Golden Press editions (I've never heard of the Grossett & Dunlap editions!). In those books American idioms were used and a number of names were altered to sound more American (like Hudson Manor for Marlinspike Hall).

You can read more about them in this article.

Of course you are correct, my memory failed me there. I have seen your article about them, and it is the Golden Press editions (both Golden Press and Grossett & Dunlap were once big children's book publishers).

I just read the article, very interesting, I love the look of the old covers, very retro. Tintinologist the site should publish a book, rival Michael Farr ;)
