Hello everybody,

For a long time I have the idea of creating a new Tintin website. My goal is a website dedicated to all the translations of the 24 comic albums made by Hergé.

You won't find in-depth information about Hergé or the Tintin stories as there are numerous excellent websites that do that already. This websites tries to give you detailed information about each translation.

I hear you all thinking "not another website about the translations", but this one is different. I Googled a lot to check other websites which shows a list of translations. These websites are not always up-to-date and if they are they only show the private collections and wish list of the webmaster. Noting wrong with that, but that my goal.

A new website means that still a lot needs to be done. It is possible to make it a successful website like we have done before for Asterix (www.asterix-obelix.nl - check the many languages). For Tintin I like to create such an translation archive too.

The Asterix website is quite impressive, wouldn't you need Moulinsart's permission to do the same with Tintin though?

In the past there where many discussions about "what is allowed and not" concerning websites. As long as you mention the (c) of the original owner and don't offer complete pages, fan websites are allowed. A famous example is the Harry Potter case. Once a girl had a fan site and Warner (copy right holder) started a lawsuit. Bad luck for Warner since the girls father was a famous lawyer. Warner lost...

For Asterix as well as Tintin we only give information about the translations there where published. This is public information. By law it is allowed to show small samples. It's the same as you do at the University when you write your thesis for example. The only thing you must do is showing the source and (c) rights.

We're not talking here about what is - or isn't - permissible in terms of law, but the boundaries of member conduct which have been set; just in terms of politeness, if you wish to promote another website, or take advantage of the goodwill of our members for research or whatever, it's always best to run it bast Admin first, so that it doesn't look like leeching or spamming.
Irene doesn't ask anything from anyone for providing us all with this space, so we, and she, appreciate it if contact is made and permission sought for doing it.

The French-to-English translators are Michael Turner and Leslie Lonsdale-Cooper.

HI, I translated 4 adventures for the special Italian edition by Reppubblica in 2003: Obiettivo Luna, Uomini sulla Luna, Tintin in Tibet and I Gioielli della Castafiore. Then the redaction staff of Repubblica worked on my translations, but I don't know their names... Anyway a dossier about that translation is on line here: http://www.afnews.net/tintin/speciale

I've also got albums in Dutch and Spanish, but they don't mention the translators.

Also, I can't make out the names of the translators in the Arabian and Hungarian editions I've got.

It is a bit mixed in Turkey (Turkish);

Part 1

The official Tintin editions came after 1994 in Turkey (except two adventures published by 'Karaca Publishing House' in 60's, 'Affair' and 'Coke en Stock', but no translator mentioned in them)

Two publishing houses ('Yapı Kredi Yayınları' and 'Inkilap') published Tintin since 1994 until now.
-Yapı Kredi published from 94- 99 (I am not sure about the last date)
-Inkilap have been publishing the albums since 2003

I have got some Tintin albums from 'Yapi Kredi Publising House', I didn't buy the same albums from 'Inkilap Publishing House' again. Then I would give information about the albums in my library;

Land of the Soviets - Translator's name; Togay Şenalp - Pblction House; Yapı Kredi
Seven Crystal Balls- Translator's name; Sevgi Gücüm - Pblction House; Yapı Kredi

Castafiore, Pharaoh, Picaro, Sidney, America, Red Rackham's Treasure - Translator's name; Barış Kılıçbay P.H.:Yapı Kredi

Congo, Black Island, Shooting Star, Prisoners of the Sun- Translator: Ela Güntekin


Part 2

-In 1958 ArmaÄŸan Publication House published Tintin; it doesn't mention the translator. But as to my knowledge; Hamit Åžendur and/or ErdoÄŸan Bozok are translators. (Imitation)

-Then Burhan Publication House published Tintin in 60's and a few in 70's. In the first editions 'Ali Avni Öneş' seems as the translator at the beginning of 60's. Then no name can be seen as a translator at the later editions. (Imitation and Pirate)

-And Alfa Publication House published the albums, I do not remember any translator in them. (Imitation)
