Auguste Piccard: Did he know he inspired Professor Calculus?

Hard to tell. The nearest I can get to Herge confirming that Piccard was the model is in the interviews with Numa Sadoul from 1975, long after Piccard's death in 1962.

Mind you, 1962 was also about the time that Herge was working on "The Castafiore Emerald" in which Bianca mentions Calculus' balloon flights - getting him mixed up with Piccard.
