Ever thought of adding a chat room to spruce up the website?

Thanks for your suggestion, Vish.

There is no immediate plan to re-introduce a chat room until we know we can schedule some special chat events and attend the sessions ourselves.

Years ago we did set up a chat room, but it just sat empty for most of the time. The chat room sat empty because few users ever entered the room at the same time.

It is best to set up a chat room when we have more members - I'm trying to get my project work mates to join.......
Or we could announce a specific time for all possible members to chat in the chatroom.

I agree that it would be great to have chat rooms when we have more members. If webmasters are seriously considering it, I suggest we build chat rooms for different time zones. For example, "Chat room in Americas", "Chat room in Europe", "...in Asia", etc. So it's easier for members to pick the right time... It might be a lot of work, just a suggestion.
Thank you for a great website. I have been enjoying it very much so far.

Many thanks for the suggestion and kind compliment. Currently, there are no plans to offer chat here. However, if we decide to support chat, your thoughts will be duly considered.

I would like to know everybody's opinion, should this site have chat rooms? It would be enjoyable and would remove the problem of post's that are minor and insignificant being posted. However i too realize that there would be a need to monitor inappropriate use of language and it would be difficult on moderators. Just a thought, what does everybody else think??

I love this idea! Our conversation a while ago in the "How popular is Tintin in your country?" thread got deleted! *cries*
Let's do this (again).

While any member is always welcome to suggest new features for the site, we have to remember that Tintinologist.org only exists thanks to the kindness and dedication of Irene, our site Admin, who owns it. It is purely at her discretion to add (and indeed remove) services, and not the result of a popular vote.

She provides all the technical services, looks after the server space, and pays for the domain registrations and outgoings which keeps the place running, granting free posting access to her site for all members who agree to the (few) conditions she asks of us all.

Furthermore, she acts as a mod, bringing that team to a total of four; as such it seems unlikely that a feature such as chat-rooms is feasible, even if it was to be technically possible.

On the matter of personal conversations, we ask that all members keep posts “on-topic… …and of general interest” (rule number 2, in our terms and conditions).

We know that in a discussion, or interacting on the forum, there will always be an element of “conversation” between two or more people, and that the nature of things is for the conversation to wander somewhat. This means that the mods will try to allow a little latitude, but nudge things back on course when needed.

However, when it becomes only about two people chatting, removing the required element of “general interest”, and making it of limited worth to the wider community, then it is indeed possible – in fact probably inevitable – that the conversation will be brought to a close and/ or removed.

I completely understand what your saying and i thank Irene for the contributions and effort she puts into this site to make it what it is. I just wanted to know what people think of this issue (as in should we have chat rooms or not) i see now the decision does indeed come down to her. Hopefully in future she will allow, regardless this still is a superb site!!

AngelofLight:
Maybe we could have a thread like a chat room, in the member's lounge? Where we could just discuss whatever, whenever. Just an idea.

Brianna:
Hmm ... perhaps you guys could start a Chit-Chat thead in the Member's Lounge for casual daily discussion?

I can't see how a general thread for chit-chat is going to to be anything other than a personal conversation, likely to wander off-topic and only be of interest to those having that conversation. Because of that it will most likely exclude anyone else from taking part and break several of our rules - my fellow moderator, jock123, has already mentioned rule 2. A chit-chat thread is unlikely to be of general interest, nor will it stay on-topic or be constructive. For that reason I'd prefer one wasn't started. We already allow people to discuss anything they like in the members lounge, within reason, so if there's something you want to discuss by all means start a thread about it. As long as it is constructive, stays (relatively) on-topic and is of general interest (meaning, anyone can join in) there should be no problem!
