In the English version (page 17, last panel), someone in the cockpit does state: "We're going too fast! We're done for!"

However, in the original French, the statement is more along the lines of: "If that thing up ahead doesn't hold, we're done for!" indicating that they were aware of the net. In fact, when planning the operation, Colombani and Boehm would have insisted upon it: "No net, no Carreidas, no account number, Mr Rastapopoulos!"

He is a sort of baddie who at the same time is cool, a kind of wiseguy with wit and a charm that other baddeis lack.

One thing that is not so cool is when he first appears: he steps on Snowy's foot, causing the poor thing to howl in pain! and does not show any sympathy! He doesn't even apologies. What an unpleasant creep.

Indeed. He wastes no time in showing us that he's on the bad side of the conflict.
