He seems to be American in the English translations, but I'm not sure if it was that way in the original books.
I read that he was based on Aristotle Onassis, a Greek, but I don't remember where.
There are certainly many similarities between the two men...

Moderator Note: As this thread goes to some trouble to point out, there is nothing in the books in English or French to establish conclusively where he comes from, or what his nationality or ethnicity are, lthough there are clues. He ceratinly isn't specifically American in the English version.
