At the end of Destination Moon, Tintin sees Captain Haddock writing and comments on what a long letter it is. Captain Haddock tells Tintin that it is not a letter but his will. Today I suddenly started wondering who Captain Haddock would will his things to if both Tintin and Calculus would likely die with him if he was to die. Would he leave Marlinspike hall to Nestor or Captain Chester? since the Thom(p)sons were not expected to accompany them to the moon, he might have left some stuff to them. Maybe his mother, mentioned in The Crab With the Golden Claws was still alive. Or, maybe he left his stuff to be sold to benefit the SSS, which he was president of in The Shooting Star. What does everyone think? who would the Captain will his possesions to? In any normal condition, I would think Tintin or Calculus, but they were going with him.

Thats an intresting thought. I'm torn between the idea of him leaveing it to someone or a group (SSS) that he knew would survive him or for sentamental value to Tintin and Calculus.

I'm doubtful that Captain Haddock would leave all of his things to Nestor because nestor is just a butler. He is a good butler, but I don't know if the Captain would consider him a friend.

I’m surprised you’d say that - I think that Haddock must set great store in him, as he appears to pretty much look after the estate for the Captain; I could imagine him being a trusted friend to Haddock, and I’m sure Nestor would be well taken care of if anything ever happened to him. As Marlinspike was Nestor’s home before it was Haddock’s, I like the notion of him being given it as a reward.

I suppose Nestor might be given some of the estate, like maybe the property, but I doubt that he would get all of it.

Maybe his mother, mentioned in The Crab With the Golden Claws was still alive.

Er, Haddock did bawl about his mother in "Crab" but I don't think that means she is still alive.

He can't possibly have left it all to one person. If you remember that panel, Haddock had an enormous pile of paper in front of him. He was certainly not going "All to Nestor" or "All to the Society of Sober Sailors". Also if you recall, Haddock had acquired an enormous amount of artwork and statuary along with Marlinspike Hall. He was probably listing and bequeathing each item of it to a different person: to Nestor, Chester, his old ship crew members (except Mate Alan I guess) and so on. I don't know if he'd leave too much to the Thompsons - I don't get the impression he was too fond of them. I wonder if he'd leave anything to the Castafiore?

It was also a rather long letter, so if he left everything to one person...well, he needs a lesson in being concise. :P

That being said, Marlinspike is not all he owns, and I'm sure he left things to the FAMILIES of his friends, even if they were to perish with him.

I suppose he was bequeathing much of the artwork to various museums.
