Hello!
My name is Gilad, I'm 28 years old, and I'm new at here, and I'd like to ask some questions about the collector's gift set.

I'm from Israel, and in Israel not all the Tintin books have been translated, only 11 books, 5 recently, and 6 more when I was a child, which you can't get any more.
I love Tintin very much, and due to the new translations, I have decided to buy the collection in English, and to wait for the translation of all the books (which probably will never occur) and so here's where your help comes in(I hope)!

If I understand correctly (correct me if I'm wrong) this collection includes all the books except three (Soviets, Congo and Alph-Art), but does include Tintin & Cº.
Now, here are my questions (at last):

1. Why if I look in the picture, I can see the the names of the 3 missing books, and can't see Tintin & Cº? Are there two collections with the same name?
2. Can I get the collection with those three missing books? Or do I need to buy each book by itself?
3. What exactly is the book Tintin & Cº
4. If you had to choose between Tintin & Cº and those three books, which would you prefer?

I hope I'll get some answers here.

Thank you!
Gilad

33 views and not one answer? :(

Moderator Note: Now now! Please be patient - it is seen as impolite to bump your own thread up to the top of the list again by posting yourself (unless of course you have found the answer to your own query).
It doesn't matter if 3, 33 or 333 people view the thread - only people who have an answer are able to reply, and someone will if they can.
Until then, all you can do is wait.

Hi Gilad,

Patience is a virtue :)

Welcome to the forum. I can't answer all of your questions because I don't own that gift set, but:

'Tintin & Co' is a book written after Hergé's death, and describes Tintin and all the other characters that appear in the series. It goes into some detail about where Hergé found inspiration for many of them.

It is a nice book, but I prefer another book about the Tintin universe - 'Tintin and the World of Hergé' by Benoit Peeters. A version of this was translated into English (by Michael Farr) around 1990, but this may be hard to find.

'Soviets' is the very first Tintin adventure. Compared with the later books, it is quite unsophisticated in both content and drawing style.

'Alph-Art' is a story Hergé had begun around the time of his death. He had not advanced very far, and it consists of a rough outline of the story with no completed drawings. IMO, it is only of interest to die-hard Tintin enthusiasts.

'Congo' is an early Tintin adventure which Hergé re-drew and colourized years after the first edition was released. It's a great looking book, but not as sophisticated as later stories.

Be advised that the books in the gift set you are looking at in Amazon are not the full size versions. The stories are complete, but the pictures are reduced in size. This allows them to include several stories in each volume.

Cheers,

Thanks Harry!

as you can see, i'm new at tintin world so i still have some basic questions..
I need to go to long and boring discussion at work, but want to ask something more:
-Did those 3 books came at in colour and in English?
- Is the new version of Congo is censord or something? I saw some version to download, if i understand correctly is the oldest one- in english and B&W.
- are all the 3 books in one that are avilable (not only in this set) are reduced in size?

Hi Gilad,

There are two versions of 'Congo' and they are both available in english. The early version (1931) was never colourized by Herge. The later, re-drawn and colourized version (1946) was translated into english a few years ago.

Neither 'Soviets' or 'Alph-Art' were colourized by Herge, but both are available in english.

Yes, the '3 in 1' Tintin books are reduced in size. There has been a lot of discussion in this forum about these books (read here). The primary concern with these books seems to be the small lettering. Some people find this a disappointment.

As far as I know, 'Congo' was never censored. However, the story has proved controversial over the years. Simply put, Tintin and Snowy are shown to display a less than politically correct attitude toward the African natives in places. If you search the forums here you'll find much discussion on this topic, and more :)

A good place to start is here.

Regards,
-Harry-

Thanks again,
Is the reduced size significant? What is the difference? Is it really hard to read, or just "less nice"?
It is cheaper that way...
I saw the argument you linked to (BTW- how do you do such a link? I didn't succeed).
so I'll ask my first question again - are there two sets? One with Congo, Soviet and Alph-Art, and one with Tintin & Co?

I really appreciate all the help...

I wouldn't buy the whole set of 3 in 1 books if you're not sure on them. Why not order one volume and see what you think. Congo, Soviets and Alph-Art are included in one volume, but I wouldn't get that first, as they are probably the weakest books of the series.

The blue lotus- why buy the whole set?
1. I love tintin, and i think, and almost sure, that the difference in size is not so meaningful, I just want to be sure.
2. my wife's father is going to the states next month, so i can ship the books to where he stays, if I order only 1 volume, and want the rest later, its more complicated.
3. I'm planing that this set will be my birthday gift from my wife (she still doesn't know it... :) )

This why i first want to know if there is a set that includes the 3 "other" books, or I have to buy each 1 of the 8 books apart (which can complicate my wife, and therefore she want buy them..)
