Hollywood screenwriter Melissa Mathison has died, it was announced yesterday.

Best known perhaps for her collaborations with director Steven Spielberg, on films such as E.T. - The Extra-Terrestrial, she was said to have been the author of an unmade treatment or script for a Tintin movie (possibly called Tintin and the Lost City of Ivory) in the early Eighties, when Mr. Spielberg was negotiating with Hergé to bring the Boy Reporter to the cinema screen.

She was also a friend of the Dalai Lama and a campaigner for Tibetan freedom, a cause espoused by the Hergé estate with events such as the Naar Tibet met Kuifje exhibition which toured several venues.

Our condolences to her family and friends.
